Makepeace Associates was created by Ian Squair who is an associate member of the chartered institute of building and a mediator accredited by the London school of mediation.
Ian has twenty five years experience in construction and property and spent a decade of that time solely working on Listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. He has been involved in projects both high profile and more humble, ranging from the fire restoration of Windsor Castle to conservation of cob structures. His experience crosses all of the traditional skills used.
Ian has experience with modern structures and has often worked to create new buildings that benefit from today’s building techniques but look traditional and in keeping with the landscape. This isn’t to say that he believes only vernacular copies are appropriate and has worked with clients to produce very modern looking structures attached to older buildings.
With his considerable experience in both rural and urban buildings he's well placed to prepare pre-purchase reports that provide an inspection in-line with the RICS guidance 3rd edition. He's advised on the costs of repair and maintenance of a wide range of buildings and is acutely aware of the variation this can bring.
Ian trained as a mediator because he's passionate about dispute resolution. He became frustrated by seeing construction disputes escalate into massive costs for both parties. He believes that disputants need to grasp early that only a "pyrrhic victory" should be expected from litigation.
